Zombie Town (PS4) – Video Game Review

I’ll be honest, I didn’t quite expect to be reviewing video games again anytime soon. Nor would I have ever expected a game like Zombie Town to mark my return to form. Yet… Here we are!

And, hey, I guess that overall I shouldn’t be too surprised or anything. A lot of the games I play are more like Zombie Town than I am necessarily happy to admit to. The cons of being a PlayStation trophy hunter, I guess. You tend to play a lot of obscure games. And, sometimes, those games are good. Most times, however, they are rather unpleasant. Zombie Town, admittedly, is somewhere right in the middle of that spectrum. Leaning more toward unpleasant though, unfortunately.

It’s not necessarily the gameplay itself that makes Zombie Town something of a slog. Rather, it’s the game’s presentation as a whole that just didn’t click with me. I found the artwork to be generic and uninspired. It didn’t really elicit any emotion from me. Which is kind of a big deal to me because I enjoy video games with an unique, esoteric art style. Like, art style and presentation is the bare minimum for me in a game and Zombie Town doesn’t even achieve the bare minimum.

The gameplay, however, is mostly solid. Repetitive, sure. But it has an addictive quality to it overall. Now, this isn’t the most addictive game I’ve ever played. But I could easily see people getting hooked on this one. For how long? I’m not entirely sure. But I’d say long enough for them to feel like they’ve gotten their money’s worth. Which, speaking of, the game is relatively cheap at $7.99 (USD) on the PlayStation Store. Still feels kind of expensive to me though, but who am I to say really? I mean, I bought it. Regrettably.

I know I’m being rather harsh on the game right now, too. But that’s because I truly feel like it underperformed and under-delivered on the kind of experience I expected from it initially. And I really was not expecting much from it to begin with, honestly. I just bought it for the easy platinum. But I was expecting it to be a bit more fun to play… It’s not. Zombie Town is rather boring. Maybe it would be better suited on the Nintendo Switch, in quicker sessions? Can’t say.

So yeah, Zombie Town was kind of a bummer. Oh, and by the way… There is only one music track that just continuously loops. Which, really, adds to the repetition of the entire thing. I guess if there was maybe a bit more variety – in the level design or the bosses or something – then maybe this could have passed as a harmless pastime. But, as it stands, there’s little variety. Your character walks painstakingly slow. And there’s just an abundance of problems that make it hard to recommend this one (unless you’re looking for an easy platinum). Yet, this is, somehow, not the worst game I have played. Surprisingly.
